The Half Guard

The half guard is a very popular transitional position in ground fighting. There is an abundance of instructional material for sale that is entirely devoted to attacking from and defending the half guard. The half guard was previously seen as a bad position to be in, and was commonly referred to as the half mount.

The half guard is when you only have one of the opponent's legs in your guard (between your legs). This position is most often used as a transitional movement, leading into various sweeps. It can also be used to control the opponent's leg.

The half guard is a relatively advanced position in grappling. Beginners will find it difficult to move and transition to other positions. In the early stages of grappling training, the half guard is most effectively used as a method of getting back to the full closed guard.
